Project Description
The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is the world’s largest public agricultural research partnership with presence a in 89 countries and the largest and most frequently accessed network of genebanks globally. Canada is supporting CGIAR’s 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy to deliver impact in the areas of climate adaptation and mitigation; environmental health and biodiversity; gender equality youth and social inclusion; nutrition health and food security; and poverty reduction livelihoods and jobs. This funding comes from Canada’s $5.3 billion Climate Finance Commitment and is part of Canada’s overall institutional support to CGIAR.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for Canada’s Institutional Support include: (1) improved adaptation and mitigation of climate change; (2) improved environmental health and biodiversity; (3) increased empowerment of women and youth and improved social inclusion; (4) improved nutrition health and food security; and (5) reduced poverty and improved livelihoods.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of 2022 include: (1) enabled shift from water-intensive rice to more profitable and less resource-consumptive crops in India. This resulted to more than 700 000 farmers intensifying crop management practices and diversifying production on over 35 930 hectares (2) (CGIAR) genebanks conserved 30 crops and 3 000 species distributed 57 518 germplasm samples to 87 countries and breeding systems recorded 2.5 million data points; (3) 700 radio extension services reached 12 million farmers in 40 sub-Saharan African countries that uses CGIAR’s AI to analyze survey voicemails from farmers; (4) provided technical support to 7600 participants in 20 collaborative breeding networks across 26 countries partnering with 38 national agricultural research and extension systems; (5) enabled partners to release 303 varieties built on improved CGIAR germplasm of which 73% carry greater climate resilience and 35% reduce malnutrition among women and children; and (6) transferred 50 000 Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) to Nigeria as the first step in establishing a GIFT-based aquaculture industry.
