Project Description

This project aims to support the Canadian sovereign loan to the Government of South Africa for the Just Energy Transition partnership . This partnership aims to transition to a low-carbon economy and strengthen resilience to climate change. Project activities include: (1) reviewing the existing public programs to improve access to quality services for people affected by climate-induced shocks; (2) re-designing programs to effectively support local economic diversification and skills training for workers; (3) supporting government officials to enhance their skills for managing the socio-economic impacts of climate change and transition to low-carbon economy; and (4) facilitating community participation in the Just Energy Transition.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved South African government’s capacity to support workers affected by the Just Energy Transition; (2) enhanced government knowledge and capacity to make evidence-based policy changes that reduce women’s vulnerability to the Just Energy Transition and enhance their adaptive capacity to climate change; (3) increased capacity of the government to support community-led mechanisms that facilitate participatory decision-making; and (4) increased number of women-owned businesses securing contracts associated with the Just Energy Transition.
