Project Description

This grant represents Canada's institutional support to the twelfth replenishment of the Asian Development Fund (ADF) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). ADB uses these funds and other donors’ funding to achieve its mandate. ADB’s mandate is to provide grants to the poorest countries in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen support for the most vulnerable regions namely the Fragile and Conflict-Affected States and the Pacific Island Countries. Project activities include: (1) building expanding and improving green and sustainable infrastructure such as building or upgrading roads; (2) providing better water and clean energy to more households; (3) promoting greater food security; (4) strengthening preparedness and response to climate change and disasters; (5) supporting the development of a vibrant private sector while also improving good governance and capacities such as public sector management; (6) promoting regional public goods such as cross-border health security or the implementation of COP21 commitments; (7) promoting gender inclusion across ADF operations by increasing direct programming towards women and girls; and (8) expanding interventions in the social sectors such as improving people’s access to quality health and vocational education.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) reduced poverty in the Bank’s poorest and most vulnerable developing member countries by improving the quality of and access to education. This including for girls connecting new households to electricity increasing financial access including women and small and medium enterprises and providing additional households with new or improved water supply and sanitation services; (2) increased regional cooperation and integration in the Asia-Pacific region by building or upgrading roads and railways increasing daily use of these roads and railways establishing new or improved energy transmission distribution lines water supply pipes and wastewater treatment capacity; and (3) ensured the promoting of a greener economic growth to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure that an important part of the new energy generation capacity installed comes from renewable energies
