Project Description
The project seeks to foster low-carbon and climate-resilient economies in three districts of Zimbabwe (Gwanda Mwenezi and Binga) to support vulnerable groups of women men boys and girls while strengthening the biodiversity. These three regions are experiencing significant loss of biodiversity and ecosystems. They are strongly affected by climate change and experience high levels of food insecurity. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness and building the capacity of women and men to develop and implement nature-based solutions for the restoration of natural ecosystems; (2) strengthening agricultural production by integrating nature-based solutions into agricultural systems; and (3) strengthening the capacity of communities and in particular women to implement sustainable value chains and develop new market opportunities and business development activities. This project should directly benefit approximately 66 577 people (33 553 women and 33 024 men) including 7 783 young women and 8 326 young men. Note that 3 817 women and 4 871 men of the beneficiaries are over 65 years old.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased adoption of nature-based and gender-responsive solutions for climate change adaptation. These solutions reduce vulnerability and increase biodiversity within terrestrial ecosystems in targeted districts; and (2) enhanced indigenous-led nature-friendly conflict-sensitive and climate-resilient livelihood opportunities. This particularly for women and girls thanks to the sustainable use of biodiversity in the targeted districts.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) adopted tools and approaches developed by 95% of partner institutions (19 out of 20) to enhance environmental governance and integrated sustainable natural resource management practices into their policies; (2) raised awareness among 75 local communities on sustainable biodiversity management and resilient agricultural practices with a particular focus on women and young people; (3) supported participation of over 1 200 individuals including representatives from community groups NGOs and local governments in training sessions workshops and strategic planning meetings. This helped to strengthen their commitment to natural resource conservation; (4) structured local environmental governance and improved the resilience of priority ecosystems through the development and implementation of 6 participatory management plans.
