Project Description
The grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). UNICEF uses these funds along with other donor funding to achieve its mandate. Guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child UNICEF supports the rights of children to help meet their basic needs and expand opportunities for children to reach their full potential. UNICEF seeks to improve the social and economic conditions of children by ensuring that they have access to health care clean water food and education. UNICEF also works to ensure that children are protected from violence and abuse and receive relief in disasters. Canada's support to UNICEF helps to advance Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy which will help the poorest and most vulnerable support fragile states and underpin Canada’s international efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) every child including adolescents survives and thrives with access to nutritious diets quality primary health care nurturing practices and essential supplies; (2) every child including adolescents learns and acquires skills for the future; (3) every child including adolescents is protected from violence exploitation abuse neglect and harmful practices; (4) every child including adolescents has access to safe and equitable water sanitation and hygiene services and lives in a safe and sustainable climate and environment; and (5) every child including adolescents has access to inclusive social protection and lives free of poverty.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of January 2023 include: (1) 356.3 million children (under 5 years old) benefited from programmes to prevent malnutrition; (2) 37.9 million out-of-school children and adolescents (49% girls) accessed education in 2022; (3) 17.2 million adolescent girls received prevention and care interventions to address child marriage through UNICEF-supported programmes in 2022; (4) over 380 000 girls and women received prevention and protection services to eliminate female genital mutilation; (5) over 4.7 million adolescents benefited from sexual and reproductive health services; (6) provided 39 million people with water sanitation or hygiene services in humanitarian emergencies; and (7) reached over 129 million children through cash transfer programming.
