Project Description
This project aims to increase women’s participation and leadership in political institutions and decision-making across political and civic spaces in Lebanon embracing diversity. Project activities include: (1) providing training coaching and networking support to women leaders in parliament municipal councils syndicates and universities. It does so to encourage women to be prominent effective and independent leaders; (2) establishing women leaders’ groups at the municipal level and building their capacities to develop local action plans carry out initiatives voice women’s priorities and demand and influence local decision-makers; (3) providing technical support to feminist coalitions and the national women’s rights machinery to enhance their capacity to build alliances and advocate for gender-responsive reforms. It focuses on issues such as personal status sexual and gender-based violence nationality reform and quotas in elected bodies; (4) supporting evidence-based advocacy to promote gender equality and women's political participation. This includes challenging gender norms and stereotypes promoting women in leadership roles and encouraging men’s engagement in care and home duties; and (5) implementing initiatives to prevent and respond to violence against women in politics such as cyber-bullying
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased participation of 1 000 women who assume leadership positions and promote gender justice in political and civic spaces; (2) enhanced advancement of key gender reforms and accountability measures on women’s rights and feminist leadership by feminist coalitions and national women rights machinery; and (3) increased commitment of men and women to challenge barriers to women’s leadership and political participation focusing on time poverty and gender bias. This would directly benefit 100 women leaders and engage 500 men in care work while promoting women’s leadership.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2023 include: (1) onboarded 49 members of the feminist platform and 33 actively participated in meetings that resulted in 3 common priorities and advocacy strategies; (2) UN Women (UNW) held 5 of the 12 technical meetings with the National commission for Lebanese Women (NCLW) and provided them with technical advice to enhance their capacity to advocate for an increase in women’s participation in leadership; (3) created an informal space for the 8 elected women members of parliament (MP) with 6 meeting twice in 2023 and discussing pressing gender priorities and means of lobbying for gender reforms; (4) 10 MPs publicly announced their support for a gender quota in the upcoming municipal elections; (5) the UNW created 1 social media and 1 video campaign promoting the importance of women’s participation in the municipal electoral process and raising awareness on violence against women in politics; and (6) 7 civil society organizations collaborated on updating a unified online platform for women to report violence in politics and receive specialized services.
