Project Description
This project provides the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with funding to remove 32 high activity disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS) in six countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The devices containing the DSRS are in temporary storage without a long-term life-cycle management strategy resulting in security concerns if the material falls out of regulatory control.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) safe and secure removal of 32 high activity DSRS from the inventories of the beneficiary states; and (2) ensure the recycling or repatriation of all removed DSRS.
Progress & Results Achieved
Result achieved as of April 2023 includes the safe and secure removal of 27 disused sealed radioactive sources from Bolivia Ecuador Paraguay and Uruguay for recycling or repatriation. One source remains in use and four remain in the process of being removed.
