Project Description

This project aims to increase the effectiveness of United Nations (UN) peace operations by improving the UN’s ability to implement the UN’s peacekeeping commitments including Women Peace and Security agenda and by enhancing UN peacekeeping missions’ ability to implement their mandates in a gender-responsive manner. This project supports the UN Department of Peace Operations and the Department of Management Strategy Police and Compliance. Project activities include: (1) supporting civilian and child protection work at UN headquarters and in field missions; (2) promoting Women Peace and Security (WPS); (3) addressing issues of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse; and (4) facilitating peacekeeping intelligence through integrated analysis.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved practice of the United Nations to implement the Action for Peacekeeping commitments including the continued implementation of the women peace and security (WPS) agenda; and (2) increased efficiency of United Nations peacekeeping mission to implement their mandates in a gender responsive manner.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of October 2024 include: (1) increased ability of men and women peacekeepers to protect women children and human rights and prevent and mitigate sexual exploitation and abuse within UN peace operations. It does so by providing training and support to peacekeepers before deployment during missions and to UN staff at headquarters; and (2) improved ability of UN peace operations to collect and track performance data on implementing the women peace and security agenda and peacekeeping intelligence by using the comprehensive planning and performance assessment system.
