Project Description
This project aims to reduce the amount of female genital mutilation and number of child marriages that take place in Sudan. It also increases gender equality in communities. Project activities include: (1) holding community dialogues and community theatre events to allow girls women and communities to discuss and challenge harmful social and gender norms; (2) supporting youth movements in their efforts to end female genital mutilation and child marriage; (3) training midwives to prevent them from practicing female genital mutilation; and (4) supporting the implementation of the law banning female genital mutilation in Sudan.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) a positive shift in social and gender norms around female genital mutilation and child marriage in target locations; and (2) strengthened governmental and non-governmental systems to prevent female genital mutilation and child marriage and effectively support those who have been affected by the practices.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2024 include: (1) A perceived 44% decline in women genital mutilation among girls aged 10 to 14 compared to women over the age of 30 alongside a shift in the perceived ideal age of marriage to 18 to 24 years old reflecting meaningful progress in transforming harmful social norms; (2) supported 335 service delivery points across 13 states including child friendly safe learning spaces women and girls safe spaces health facilities and mobile clinics reaching over 746 000 individuals with integrated gender-based violence women genital mutilation and child marriage response services and messaging; (3) established 827 Girls’ Clubs and Child Friendly Safe Spaces; (4) trained 2 379 law enforcement judicial and health professionals on Article 141 which criminalizes women genital mutilation; (5) supported 1 426 communities with trained community leaders role models and influencers who help shift harmful traditions like child marriage and female genital mutilation; and (6) helped 22 new communities publicly declare abandonment of women genital mutilation (bringing the total to 1 919) and reached over 1 million people through mass media campaigns promoting positive social norms.
