Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s long-term institutional support to the Adaptation Fund. The Adaptation Fund uses these funds along with other donors’ funding to achieve its mandate. It is not considered core funding as Canada’s contribution will not necessarily be renewed beyond 2026. The Adaptation Fund was originally established in 2001 under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It launched its operations in 2010 and since 2019 has served the Paris Agreement alongside the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). The Adaptation Fund is an effective global financial mechanism that focuses on adaptation and capacity building in developing countries. Since its inception in 2007 the Adaptation Fund has supported 33 million people protected more than 380 000 hectares of natural habitats and trained more than a million people in climate resilience. The Fund’s investments contribute to reducing exposure to climate-related hazards and threats; strengthening institutional governance including policies and regulations as well as awareness and ownership at the local level; and increasing adaptive capacity and ecosystem resilience in response to climate change.
