Project Description

This project aims to improve the supply of drinking water and the socio-economic well-being of vulnerable populations particularly women and girls in three communes. This will be achieved through improved access to health and education services and through interventions in governance and economic growth. Project activities include: (1) providing improved sustainable and equitable access to drinking water and basic social services in the communes of Falagountou and Gorom-Gorom; (2) supporting increased economic development and leadership of women and girls in the communes of Dori Falagountou and Gorom Gorom; and (3) establishing improved inclusive and participatory local governance and territorial management. The initiative is intended to benefit the population of the three communes estimated at 286 280 persons. In addition some 65 000 internally displaced persons who are currently being hosted by the three communes.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved drinking water supply systems built in the communes of Falagountou and Gorom-Gorom; (2) improved gender-sensitive sanitation facilities built in schools health centers and households in the communes of Dori Falagountou and Gorom-Gorom; (3) improved hygiene and sanitation practices adopted by the populations of the communes of Dori Falagountou and Gorom-Gorom; (4) technical assistance provided to the communes of Dori Falagountou and Gorom-Gorom in order to create a value chain for faecal sludge; (5) technical assistance provided to 25 women's businesses to improve production techniques and supply and sales processes; and (6) training provided in functional literacy and management tools to some 500 members of women's cooperatives.
