Project Description

This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). The GPE uses these funds and other donors’ funding to achieve its mandate. The GPE focuses on transforming education systems in low and lower middle-income countries. As a multi-stakeholder partnership the GPE aims to accelerate access learning outcomes and gender equality through equitable inclusive and resilient education systems leaving no one behind. Project activities include: (1) strengthening gender-responsive planning and policy development for system-wide impact; (2) mobilizing coordinated action and financing to enable transformative change; (3) strengthening capacity adapt and learn to implement and drive results at scale; (4) mobilizing global and national partners and resources for sustainable results; (5) supporting teacher training and providing learning materials and textbooks; (6) constructing and rehabilitating classrooms latrines and water sanitation and hygiene infrastructure; (7) establishing learning assessments and developing school-based data collection tools; and (8) building the capacity of partner countries in the education sector. The GPE aims to get 88 million more children into school and enable 175 million girls and boys to learn across 87 countries around the world by 2026.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved and more equitable student learning outcomes through quality teaching and learning; (2) increased equity gender equality and inclusion for all through quality education targeting the poorest and most marginalized including by gender disability ethnicity and conflict or fragility; and (3) increased effective and efficient education systems delivering equitable quality educational services for all.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of December 2024 include: (1) reached 253 million students through the Global partnership for education (GPE) grant activities distributed 169 million textbooks trained over 1.9 million teachers and built and renovated 36 000 classrooms; (2) 60% of partner countries increased their share of education expenditure or maintained it at the 20% benchmark or above; and (3) leveraged US$3.845 billion in additional co-financing through GPE’s innovative financing mechanisms.
