Project Description
This project aims to improve health outcomes in rural communities and especially among poor and marginalized women and girls by applying a gender-responsive One Health approach to preventing and responding to endemic zoonotic diseases. Project activities include: (1) conducting community-level awareness-raising campaigns about climate-smart One Health approaches to disease prevention and control; (2) providing technical support and small grant funding to cooperatives and entrepreneur groups on climate-smart One Health production; (3) providing training on the rapid alert and detection of disease to key community stakeholders; (4) providing training on the effective response control and mitigation of endemic zoonotic diseases to health workers veterinarians and environmental workers; and (5) supporting the development of One Health knowledge hubs in Ethiopia and Kenya Alinea International implements this project in collaboration with Farmers Helping Farmers the University of Guelph the University of Calgary the University of Saskatchewan the University of Prince Edward Island and various local organizations (public private and non-governmental) in Ethiopia and Kenya.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased community knowledge about climate-smart One Health and the roles and contributions of women girls and other marginalized groups in One Health; (2) reduced technical and financial barriers to invest in climate-smart One Health behaviours by women girls and other marginalized groups; (3) improved community capacity for inclusive gender-responsive risk-based disease surveillance and detection; (4) increased ability by key government private and non-governmental stakeholders to operationalize gender-responsive climate smart and inclusive endemic zoonotic disease prevention and control strategies at the community level; and (5) increased availability and sharing of evidence-based One Health resources in key knowledge hubs.
