Project Description
This project aims to reduce barriers to (LGBTQ2I+) gender equality in contributing to poverty reduction in Central America. The project seeks to enhance the socio-economic well-being and political empowerment of 2 800 LGBTQ2I+ individuals across its four target countries (El Salvador Guatemala Honduras and Nicaragua) through capacity-building awareness-raising and the reduction of discrimination. Project activities include: (1) implementing national strategies for the legal recognition of gender identity; (2) organizing regional forums with duty-bearers and civil society organization; (3) training regional stakeholders on gender equality human rights and inclusive language; and (4) co-developing local and national regulatory frameworks on gender-inclusive employment with civil society stakeholders.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) strengthened protection and promotion of the fundamental rights and gender equality of LGBTQ2I+ persons; (2) increased participation of LGBTQ2I+ people in equal decision-making and in democratic processes; and (3) increased employment inclusion and economic empowerment of LGBTQ2I+ people in the region.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) improved mental health and resilience of 223 (LGBTQI+) persons victims or survivors of gender-based violence based on their sexual orientation or expression in El Salvador and Honduras; (2) 179 persons (50 women 65 men and 34 people who identify with other gender identities or sexual orientations ; 20 lesbians 40 gays 35 trans persons 84 bisexuals or intersexual queer and other gender identities and sexual orientations) enhanced their capacity to advance human rights in Honduras; (3) 179 persons trained on human rights de-normalizing gender-based violence and ensuring gender equality in Honduras; (4) 179 LGBTQI+ individuals (20 lesbians 30 bisexual women 30 transexual women 40 gays 20 bisexual men 5 trans men and 34+) increased their awareness and knowledge to promote women’s participation and leadership through training that denaturalizes gender-based violence and empowers LGBTQI+ individuals; and (5) held meetings with various government institutions to discuss issues related to human rights inclusion sexual diversity and inclusive employment in Honduras.
