Project Description
This project aims to reduce the threat to the global population from nuclear and radiological materials. Through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) this project seeks to promote implementing and adhering to key nuclear security-related legal frameworks. Project activities include: (1) supporting targeted outreach to Member States to provide legislative assistance with implementation; (2) organizing mock trials and scenario-based exercises for law enforcement and judicial officials to build adherence capabilities; and (3) supporting the development of tools and resources to assist and guide Member States through joining the legal conventions.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased number of Member States initiating processes and becoming parties to the legal conventions; and (2) improved national legislation and capacity of criminal justice officials and law enforcement to investigate prosecute and adjudicate cases in which these nuclear security-related conventions would be of relevance.
