Project Description

This project builds on the experiences and results achieved through the first phase of the BERANI project (P-003038-001). It focuses on improving women and girls’ access to quality sexual and reproductive health services and stopping gender-based violence (GBV). It extends the reach to more vulnerable populations in Eastern Indonesia and neglected and underserved areas. It works closely with the Government of Indonesia including the Ministries of Health National Development Planning the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection and the Department of Family Planning at the national and local levels and civil society organizations across 14 provinces to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender equality. Project activities include: (1) providing technical assistance to Midwifery Education Centers of Excellence to deliver quality SRHR education services; (2) developing training materials on comprehensive sexuality education for junior high school and health workers; (3) conducting community mobilization and dialogue to disseminate information on preventing child marriage and positive social norms; (4) delivering training on gender equality and life skills for adolescent girls and boys; and (5) providing technical assistance to the national government to strengthen the quality of GBV services. Direct project beneficiaries include over 14 000 individuals (50% women and girls). Indirect beneficiaries include policymakers health and justice service providers police counsellors and teachers to support rights-based family planning quality midwifery training and response to GBV comprehensive sex education and efforts to eliminate child marriage and female genital mutilation.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved quality of comprehensive sexuality education and sexual reproductive health services by service providers for women and girls; (2) improved individual decision-making and community actions for the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence and harmful practices to women and girls; and (3) strengthened gender-responsive policy-making by national and sub-national governments for the advancement of sexual and reproductive health and rights of all women and girls in Indonesia.
