Project Description

This project aims to improve food and nutrition security for stakeholders particularly women and youth from farmers’ organizations in the agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries sectors in targeted communities in Burkina Faso Niger and Mali. This project supports the leadership of women and youth in implementing an innovative approach. Project activities include: (1) boosting the climate resilience of the agriculture agro-forestry livestock and fisheries sectors through better management of shared natural resources; and (2) strengthening value chains that are especially promising for women and youth to address intercommunal and transboundary issues. A variety of activities and strategies will be implemented in the Sahel region to address 4 vital and interrelated development challenges: (1) the degradation of natural resources in the face of climate change; (2) the barriers facing stakeholders from various links in the food chain especially the agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries sectors in which women and youth are heavily involved; (3) the challenges in terms of gender equality and women’s economic empowerment in accessing and managing productive resources; and (4) the gaps and weaknesses in the national and sub-regional governance of food and nutrition security.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) natural resources are more sustainably managed in the targeted communities in the face of climate change; (2) the economic activities carried out by women and men working in the agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries sectors targeted by the project produce higher yields particularly for women and youth; and (3) food and nutrition security is better governed and more gender-aware at the national sub-regional and transboundary levels.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) secured 436 hectares of farmland and 431 hectares of market garden land for female project beneficiaries; (2) implemented a joint inclusive natural resource management strategy in 27 communities; (3) 249 commercial contracts signed and formalized by farmers' organizations in market-targeted agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries sectors; and (4) 365 commercial contracts signed and completed by processing units in market-targeted agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries sectors.
