Project Description

This project seeks to reduce climate and disaster risk in Latin America and the Caribbean through the accelerated implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 ensuring that it incorporates a climate-smart gender-responsive approach to foster greener more sustainable and equitable communities. It also seeks to improve climate-smart disaster prevention by reducing existing climate and disaster risks and avoiding generating new and emerging risks. Project activities include: (1) creating conditions to strengthen gender equality and women’s empowerment in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction processes throughout the region; and (2) strengthening the understanding of disaster risks including vulnerability exposure a lack of coping capacity. This allows for more comprehensive climate-smart and risk-informed decision-making at the individual household community national and regional levels.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) accelerated Sendai Framework implementation by governments in Latin America and the Caribbean that incorporates a climate-smart gender-responsive approach benefiting from women’s leadership to foster greener more sustainable and equitable communities; and (2) improved climate-smart disaster prevention in Latin America and the Caribbean including the reduction of existing climate and disaster risk and the avoidance of generating new and emerging risk.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) provided technical support to the Statistical Conference of the Americas of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEA-CEPAL) working group to enhance statistical practices and methodologies related to disaster risk reduction. This helps ensure accurate reporting for the Sendai Framework and SDG indicators; (2) organized 33 capacity-building activities for state and non-state actors to bolster resilience and disaster preparedness. These efforts aimed at fostering inclusivity and gender responsiveness in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction programming; (3) designed Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Annex to the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities (self-assessment tool for local governments); (4) provided technical support to promote a climate-smart approach and empower women among the Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (ARISE) networks; and (5) developed and disseminated policy briefs to assist United Nations country teams and Resident Coordinators as they support host countries in achieving the Sendai Framework specifically by integrating gender perspectives into sustainable development agendas climate change actions and disaster risk reduction efforts.
