Project Description

The Targeted Support for Irrigated Land and Nutrition Opportunities (ACTION) project aims to achieve improved and sustainable economic food and nutritional security for poor rural populations (especially women and youth) practicing proximity irrigation in the project's intervention regions in Mali. The project is being implemented by two German agencies KFW and GIZ and is active in areas in the Koulikoro Mopti and Kayes regions. Project activities include: (1) developing and rehabilitating agricultural infrastructure in line with environmental standards and taking into account challenges that women face; (2) building or rehabilitating complementary hydro-agricultural facilities for women and youth; (3) supplying agricultural equipment and inputs particularly to women and youth; (4) training producers mainly women and youth in sustainable diversified and nutritionally-sensitive agricultural fish and livestock production techniques; (5) training and raising awareness among producers mainly women and youth on community equipment and agricultural inputs adapted to the effects of climate change. The project aims to reach 239 600 direct beneficiaries 50.4% of them women as well as 700 000 indirect beneficiaries in the Koulikoro Kayes and Mopti regions.

Expected Results

The expected results of this project include: (1) Increased sustainable and equitable productivity production and income (agricultural fish farming and small-scale livestock production) for male and female producers (women men and youth) in the project intervention regions; (2) Improved ecological potential of water and soil and resilience of producers to climate change in the project intervention regions; (3) Increased use of good food and nutrition practices by women and children (0-5 years) in households in project intervention regions; (4) Inclusive efficient and improved institutional governance for stakeholders and institutions involved in the community irrigation sector in Mali.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2024: (1) increased total annual production in tons of paddy rice to 1107 tons per year out of a forecast of 1320 tons per year (84% of the 2026 target); (2) increased the level of productivity of the main crops notably to 2.16 tons per hectare of paddy rice out of a forecast of 2.5 tons per hectare (86% of the 2026 target); (3) enabled 21 199 agricultural producers including 12 472 women (59% of women) to gain access to project benefits including irrigated land equipment and agricultural inputs out of a forecast of 13 800 producers 60% of whom are women; (4) allowed an equitable and increased access to equipment and inputs that are less degrading and less polluting for water soil and vegetation to 21 199 agricultural producers (including 12 472 women). This allowed to surpass the target of 13 800 producers (153% of the 2026 target); and (5) strengthened the knowledge of 5 737 beneficiaries including 3 597 women on good agricultural practices in relation to the environment and the development of resilience against climate change out of a forecast of 13 800 people (42% of the 2026 target ). These results enabled farmers to improve their agricultural productivity and their economic food and nutritional security.
