Project Description
This project aims to improve the resilience of vulnerable populations including women and children to climate shocks in Africa. Project activities include: (1) developing tools and disseminating guidelines on gender equality in disaster risk management; (2) providing support to the African Risk Capacity (ARC) member states for monitoring and reporting on the implementation of disaster response including gender activities and gender-disaggregated data; and (3) providing technical assistance to national experts to establish a network of trainers on gender in disaster risk management. The project seeks to support the ARC to expand beyond the current member countries to reach all 55 African Union (AU) member countries.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved timely cost-effective and gender-responsive solutions to extreme weather events and other climate-related natural disasters to protect the lives and livelihoods of African Union Member States; (2) improved capacity of ARC Member States to plan prepare and provide gender-responsive actions to extreme weather events and other climate-related natural disasters; and (3) strengthened participation of gender ministries civil society and women’s rights organizations in national disaster risk management mechanisms.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) protected 16 050 000 vulnerable people in 17 countries in Africa from the risk of natural disasters. This includes droughts tropical cyclones floods outbreak and epidemics; and (2) strengthened the capacities of 1 350 government officials technical experts and journalists (60% women) in 20 african countries on various topics. This includes early warning systems contingency planning climate risk insurance and adaptation finance for early and planned disasters responses to climate-related natural disasters.
