Project Description

This project funds the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Material Management and Minimization to eliminate the remaining high enriched uranium at a research reactor in Kurchatov Kazakhstan. Project activities include: (1) making structural repairs to the gantry crane track that moves heavy equipment and materials and (2) renovating the control and power systems for loading and unloading the crane.

Expected Results

The expected outcome of this project is the safe and timely removal repackaging and transport of all high enriched uranium spent fuel from the Kurchatov research reactor. This is to permanently reduce the threat that it could be acquired or used to produce an improvised nuclear device.
