Project Description
This project reviews North Korea’s chemical industry and utilizes remote sensing tools to support the analysis of activities relevant to chemical weapons at these sites. Project activities include: (1) developing a map of industrial chemical sites in North Korea that could pose a chemical weapons risk; (2) hosting and delivering consultations and workshops to gather data and expert assessment of the chemical weapons risk in North Korea; (3) mapping potential chemical weapons sites and identify potential gaps in chemical weapons production; and (4) preparing policy recommendations to national policy makers allied governments and relevant international organizations and WMD-related fora on how best to address chemical weapons risks.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project is an improved cooperation between national policymakers and international organizations (including but not limited to the G7 the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and United Nations Panel of Experts) to cooperatively identify and manage risks and ongoing developments related to North Korea’s chemical weapons program.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of February 2023 include: (1) increased knowledge and awareness by national policymakers and international organizations to better understand and assess North Korea’s chemical weapons capability; and (2) increased access by national policymakers and international organizations to information related to North Korea’s chemical weapons capability.
