Project Description
This project aims to address a funding gap related to the menstrual health component of a pilot program entitled Enhancing food and nutrition security and health for vulnerable urban dwellers in Bangladesh. The World Food Programme (WFP) the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) implements the program. This $170 052 contribution supports the Menstrual Health Management component implemented by UNFPA. It allows for the continued support of menstrual health management for vulnerable adolescent girls and women in a Dhaka slum. Project activities include: (1) providing and distributing three different types of sanitary napkins to 3 300 girls and women through 20 local shops; (2) building awareness among stakeholders of the need to address menstrual health issues; and (3) disseminating lessons learned.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased access of 3 300 vulnerable women and girls to disposable sanitary napkins for two consecutive months; (2) increased distribution of three different types of sanitary napkins through 20 local shops using block chain-based building blocks application; and (3) increased awareness by stakeholders on the need to address menstrual health for women in Bangladesh.
Progress & Results Achieved
The project distributed a total of 16 149 menstrual products among 2 800 women and girls residing in two urban slums in Dhaka utilizing the Building Blocks system leveraging existing 20 small grocery shops in the slums for the distribution to selected households. In addition menstrual health management (MHM) kits have been pre-positioned in disaster prone areas for another 600 adolescent girls. Acceptance of menstrual products through targeted behavioral change activities and their use normalized in the community through promotional activities. Menstrual products are fully integrated into the market system leading to increased accessibility and availability at more affordable prices through the initiative of shopkeepers in the project areas. Government and stakeholders mobilized to prioritize menstrual health and well-being through UNFPA hosted national dialogue on MHM coinciding with International MHM Day on May 28th 2023 which brought together over 150 stakeholders involved in MHM at the national level.
