Project Description
The project supports rural women and youth to adapt to climate change in ecologically sensitive coastal and island regions in Côte d'Ivoire Guinea-Bissau Senegal and Togo. The project aims to improve agro-ecological practices and ecosystem rehabilitation as well as the economic power of women and youth through appropriate technologies and local marketing. The project supports the participation of youth to ensure the sustainability of learning and good practices while strengthening their role in promoting gender equality climate action and biodiversity protection. Project activities include: (1) training to improve knowledge on climate policies and biodiversity; and (2)providing technical and financial support to strengthen climate-resilient agroecological practices (micro-livestock agroforestry market gardening beekeeping and oyster farming) and the provision of solar and energy-efficient equipment.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased influence of rural women and youth in climate policy advocacy and in the governance of high-biodiversity ecosystems that are vulnerable to climate change; (2) increased protection of ecosystems and biodiversity threatened by climate change through agro-ecology habitat restoration and protection projects led by rural women and youth; and (3) enhanced climate resilience of rural women and youth through economic and energy empowerment.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2023 include: (1) provided support to 200 women farmers in accessing vegetable seeds and conducting the characterization of market gardening perimeters to launch production in 2024; (2) delivered training to 11 members of the Fala di Urok community radio on equipment use maintenance and journalistic ethics; (3) built capacity for 66 individuals including 55 women to actively contribute to climate rights advocacy and local governance through a leadership and public speaking training workshop; and (4) enhanced project positioning in international debates and supported strategic advocacy efforts facilitated by participation in COP 28.
