Project Description

The Global Code of Conduct for Gathering and Using Information about Systematic and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence is a code of conduct and standards for the safe effective and ethical gathering and use of victim or survivor information on systematic and conflict-related sexual violence. A system developed through global consultations with survivors at the heart of its work. The creation of the Code responds to the proliferation of harmful information-gathering approaches that are not sensitive to survivor trauma are uncoordinated and are ineffective for documentation purposes. These harmful practices include re-traumatization personal security violations of privacy rights and failed justice outcomes. This Project focuses on building awareness and implementing the Code with key stakeholders such as investigation authorities humanitarian actors civil society media policy-makers governments and other organizations and individuals working on information-gathering with survivors. Using the Code properly means integrating it into systems processes policies contracts and terms of reference of investigation teams. Targeted activities can occur in Colombia Iraq Myanmar Syria and Ukraine among others.

Expected Results

The expected results for this project include: (1) strengthened empowerment of survivors to exercise their rights and share their information in safer and more effective ways; (2) increased qualified andbetter prepared gatherers and users of information work with survivors to enhance their rights safely and effectively; and (3) improved communication coordination and cooperation within and across sectors to ensure increased respect for survivor rights.
