Project Description

This project aims to address gender inequality and achieve environmental justice by empowering environmental climate and women’s rights movements and groups in developing countries. It seeks to influence key decision-makers (governments investors and donors) to take urgent action to divest from fossil fuel industries defend critical ecosystems and support inclusive sustainable and gender-just climate solutions. The Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action led by the Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres a women’s fund working in Central America in collaboration with Both ENDS a global environmental justice NGO and Mama Cash a women’s fund working internationally implements this project. Project activities include: (1) strengthening the capacities of women-led Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in the Global South to lead lobbying and advocacy activities for gender-just climate solutions; (2) linking climate environmental and women’s rights movements across local and national levels in selected countries and regionally and internationally; and (3) improving engagement of women-led CBOs activists and women environmental and human right’s defenders in decision-making on climate policy investments and donor funding for inclusive and gender-just climate and environmental actions. The project’s directly benefits women women-led CBOs and women and environmental rights defenders from developing countries eligible for international assistance in Africa Asia Eastern Europe Latin America and the Pacific who are working towards advancing the gender-just climate solutions. The Project ultimately benefits 100 to 150 CBOs from Indigenous rural marginalized and vulnerable communities.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased effectiveness of women-led organizations in conducting inclusive lobbying and advocacy for gender-just climate and environmental solutions; (2) increased lobbying and advocacy collaboration within and between women's rights environmental and climate movements; and (3) increased influence of women’s rights environmental and climate movements on decision-making related to climate policy investments and donor funding for gender-just climate solutions.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of January 2024 include: (1) provided technical assistance and grant funding to 18 community-based organizations to strengthen their capacities to carry out their lobbying and advocacy agenda for gender-just climate solutions. These 18 organizations are in 14 countries across 4 regions. This includes Africa (Kenya Malawi Mozambique Uganda Zambia and Zimbabwe) Asia (Mongolia Nepal India and Indonesia) Latin America (Peru Guatemala and Honduras) and the Pacific (Micronesia); (2) all supported community-based organizations reported having improved their skills in implementing lobbying and advocacy tactics and negotiations. This includes the ability to set lobbying and advocacy agenda claim environmental and human rights develop climate policy proposals engage in multi-stakeholder dialogues develop compelling narratives for the promotion of gender-just climate solutions implement communication strategies contribute to the protection of Women environment and human rights defenders community-based organizations and communities at risk; (3) the project facilitated participation of 18 community-based organizations 5 Funds and 5 NGOs in new and existing cross-movement partnerships for lobbying and advocacy on gender-just climate solutions; and (4) led 120 lobbying and advocacy initiatives (facilitated through 2 Funds and 6 NGOs) to influence governments investors and donors to take urgent climate or environmental action.
