Project Description

The Caribbean Organizations for a Resilient Environment project aims to increase the resilience of Caribbean Communities to the impacts of climate change. The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund works with the National Conservation Trust Funds in eight countries to implement local nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The project provides small- to medium-sized grants to environmental and women-rights organizations that reach key ecosystems such as mangroves coral reefs and forests and increase ecosystem services that support Caribbean communities’ resilience to climate change. The project also addresses institutional capacity gaps within regional and local organizations to ensure the sustainability of community-driven climate resilience initiatives. At the same time the project creates and strengthens innovative financing mechanisms for more sustainable climate financing in the region.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved performance of National Conservation Trust Funds (NCTFs) and environmental and women’s rights organizations to protect biodiversity and promote climate change resilience for vulnerable and marginalized local communities particularly for women; (2) enhanced viability of regional environmental organizations to expand the Caribbean Sustainable Finance Architecture in support of inclusive and gender-responsive climate resilience in communities and conservation areas; and (3) increased effectiveness of NCTFs in eight Caribbean countries to advance agendas for the sustainable inclusive equitable and gender-responsive management of biodiversity conservation and climate resilience across the Caribbean.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) 6 national conservation trust funds in the Caribbean completed self-assessments using the Conservation finance alliance practice standards and used the results to mobilize capacity-building volunteer assignments for the trust fund; (2) 6 organizational development plans were prepared to support delivering technical assistance to the National Conservation Trust Funds; and (3) 94 environmental and women’s rights organizations across the 8 project countries engaged in project briefings and consultations.
