Project Description
This project financially supports the Government of Chile’s response to the Amazon and South American wildfires specifically focusing on Paraguay and other countries in South America. Project activities include: (1) providing financial support to reimburse the Government of Chile for the deployment of aircrafts personnel and materials; (2) providing logistical support for personnel participating in this project; and (3) developing capacity-building activities for the delivery of technical assistance on forest fire management.

Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (September 2023) include: (1) delivered forest fire protection management course to 26 participants from Paraguay. These participants received training on fire origin and behaviour prevention and mitigation of damage preparation and response and planning for forest fire protection; (2) delivered forest fire course and origin investigation course to 35 participants from various institutions. They include the National Forestry Institute Paraguay's Volunteer Fire Department the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences Paraguay's Rural Association and the National Police Fire Department; (3) delivered fire use regulation course to 38 participants; (4) delivered community model for forest fire prevention and mitigation course and environmental forestry education course to 35 participants from various institutions. They include the National Forestry Institute Paraguay's Volunteer Fire Department the Volunteer Fire Department of San Lorenzo "Captain Juan Speratti" Paraguay's Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Naranjal Town Hall; and (5) organized a technical internship on the Chilean Forest Fire Protection System in partnership with the National Forest Corporation (CONAF). 15 public servants visited various CONAF facilities to better understand the protection system. These include coordination centres brigade bases bases of aerial operations and prepared communities and participated in several induction and training sessions on the organization implementation and operation of CONAF's protection system.
