Project Description
Indonesia is one of the countries most at risk from climate change. Over the past ten years rising sea levels environmental damage and the loss of biodiversity have shown how serious and complex the issue is. The project helps expand Indonesia’s efforts to adapt to and reduce the effects of climate change in key areas. It supports disaster risk reduction with a focus on climate change restores peatlands and mangroves and strengthens policies related to climate financing. Project activities include: (1) developing modelling tools that model and measure the damage and costs of flooding made worse by climate change helping to guide policy decisions; (2) developing nature-based solutions for restoring peatlands and mangroves and protecting biodiversity while recognizing and using the knowledge and skills of women; (3) conducting gender-responsive research and developing policies and programs for climate change mitigation and adaptation including carbon pricing; and (4) exploring innovative social support mechanisms to address climate risks. The project will directly benefit 30 000 university staff researchers and government officials through training and support. It will also indirectly benefit many communities especially women young people and low-income groups.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) reduced vulnerability of female and male Indonesian citizens selected industry sectors and civil society organizations to climate change-exacerbated flood events in identified high risk locations; (2) enhanced adoption of gender-responsive peatland and mangrove restoration/conservation nature-based solutions (inclusive of biodiversity co-benefits) by targeted provincial and local government academic donor CSO and industry stakeholders in Indonesia; and (3) improved contributions to selected climate finance policies of relevant ministries/agencies academia industry collaborators and civil society.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of April 2025 include: (1) completed an analysis of flood risk scenarios in Pontianak City informing the development of loss and damage scenarios; (2) supported the establishment of the IPB Center for Applied Research in Nature-based Solutions (I-CAN) which provided funding for 6 collaborative study proposals in applied research on nature-based solutions; and (3) restored 20 hectares of degraded mangrove forest in the Pasir Sakti District with ongoing monitoring of various planting designs to inform improved mangrove restoration models.
