Project Description
This project aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health of adolescent girls and young women in the Haut-Sassandra region of Côte d'Ivoire. Project activities include: (1) establishing community-based mechanisms with civil society organizations for the promotion of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescents and out-of-school youth including comprehensive sexuality education; (2) providing training to teachers and managers in the implementation of revised curricula incorporating a gender lens SRHR environmental sustainability and information and communication technologies; and (3) networking between health promoting schools civil society organizations (including women's and youth organizations) first contact health facilities the National Institute for Training of Health Workers and other authorities to exchange and consult on action to promote SRHR. This project aims to directly benefit more than 8 000 adolescent girls and young women and indirectly benefit 20 000 people including parents teachers health personnel and members of the target communities.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased demand for and access to SRHR education information and services for targeted adolescent girls and young women; (2) improved delivery of gender-responsive and inclusive health services; and (3) improved effectiveness of civil society organizations Haut-Sassandra and Côte d'Ivoire authorities in promoting gender-responsive and evidence-based SRHR laws policies plans strategies and services
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) reduced health and sexual and reproductive rights inequalities among youth resulting from the promotion of healthy and responsible sexuality increased awareness among key stakeholders (parents husbands future husbands community leaders etc.). This reduction results also from the PASSAGE project surveys which helped identify the sexual and reproductive health priorities of the target communities and the actions to be taken; (2) strengthened capacities of the National Institute for Health Worker Training enabling updated training programs better use of information technologies and improved response to sexual violence; (3) delivered a third container of equipment and supplies to the health centers allowing for adequate patient care; and (4) launched the “Act for Inclusive Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights” network bringing together 15 organizations including 4 women's organizations and 5 youth organizations with the development of advocacy strategies on various SRHR themes to raise youth awareness on issues that affect them. The progress made so far contributes to the ultimate outcome of the PASSERELLE project namely to improve human rights related to the sexual and reproductive health of women and adolescent girls in the Bas-Sassandra district of Côte d'Ivoire.
