Project Description
This project shares the expertise of Canada’s colleges and institutes in developing training for employment with counterpart institutions in six Caribbean countries where youth women and the most vulnerable face challenges accessing skills training and employment: Belize Dominica Guyana Grenada Jamaica and St. Lucia. In these countries coastal degradation and other climate change effects are the focus of government and industry-led adaptation efforts hampered by the lack of skilled technical workers. This project will contribute to Canada’s 12-year (2008-2020) $600M commitment to the Caribbean region and help advance Canadian climate change priorities.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased number of women youth and vulnerable populations trained in demand-driven technical and vocational education training fields; (2) increased capacity of training institutions to develop and deliver gender-sensitive skills training programs that meet economic and environmental needs; and (3) increased participation of small and medium-size enterprises in gender-equitable workforce planning development training and certification.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) supported new cohorts of the associate degree programs and preparatory programs to commence in Belize Dominica Grenada Guyana Jamaica and Saint Lucia; (2) supported students from 5 cohorts to complete the preparatory program in Dominica. This enabled them to enter apprenticeships or pursue certified Technical Vocational and Education (TVET) studies; (3) conducted capacity building sessions on a wide range of topics for all institutional partnerships (colleges technical and vocational institutions and universities) both in the region and in Canada. Also conducted capacity building sessions through new partnerships focusing on eco-tourism and educational technology; and (4) supported 366 students to graduate in new demand-driven targeted climate change certified TVET training courses. This includes Climate-smart Agro-processing Solar photovoltaic panel installation and Climate-smart strategies to reduce pesticide use.
