Project Description

This project aims to empower women and girls in all their diversity by increasing awareness of their rights and access to and control of resources and decision-making power particularly in Rakhine State. This includes engaging with local communities to encourage positive social norms improving equitable access to essential services and resources and increasing participation and leadership of women and girls in governance structures. The project employs a triple-nexus approach to advance women’s empowerment by coherently integrating humanitarian assistance long-term development and peace and security to meet women’s needs mitigate their vulnerabilities and address the underlying drivers of conflict. Project activities include: (1) training on basic livelihood skills to women and girls; (2) organizing community sensitization events on women's rights and the social benefits of gender equality; (3) networking and convening spaces for joint action planning facilitated with women's; and (4) conducting gender-transformative behavioural communications change campaigns challenging stereotypes that lead to systemic discrimination against women and girls. This projects expects to reach 28 983 people in Rakhine State among whom 6 521 are young women.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased adoption of positive social norms and behaviours by communities in crisis-affected and disadvantaged regions of Rakhine State in support of GE women and girls' rights and peaceful co-existence; (2) improved equitable access to and control over gender-responsive basic services and resources by women and girls in Rakhine State; and (3) increased participation and leadership of women and girls particularly those in Rakhine State in local national and global decision-making spaces on governance peace and socio-economic recovery and development.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) the project reached 56 233 people; (2) 1 998 people (1 154 women and 844 men) attended community awareness and sensitization sessions; (3) distributed dignity kits to 62 058 persons; and (4) a total of 157 persons (65 adults and 92 women) from 15 targeted villages participated in Oxfam's gender program which reached a total of 2 166 young and adult women.
