Project Description
Canada’s Phase 2 support to the Livelihoods and Food Security Fund (LIFT) presents two overarching priorities for nutrition over the next three years (2022-2024) which impact on the crucial 1000 days from pregnancy up until the child's second birthday and beyond for populations across Myanmar including those in Rakhine State. These are 1) safeguarding the nutrition status of Myanmar’s vulnerable populations particularly women and children from immediate threats that lead to undernutrition; and 2) protecting short- and medium-term food and nutrition security of vulnerable groups including women children internally displaced people ethnic minorities migrant workers and people living with disabilities in order to mitigate the crisis and prevent backsliding on decades’ worth of progress. The project also extends its support to populations across Myanmar including those in Rakhine State by increasing economic opportunities improving nutrition outcomes and empowering women and ethnic minorities. Project activities include: (1) delivering community-based nutrition interventions including the provision of services where gaps exist; (2) building the gender-responsive institutional and implementation capacity at various levels of Ethnic Service providers and civil society organizations to provide quality health nutrition and protection services; and (3) ensuring the availability of and access to safe water hygiene and sanitary systems (WASH) linked to the current LIFT COVID-19 response.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased safeguarding of the nutrition status of Myanmar’s vulnerable population particularly women and children from immediate threats to undernutrition; and (2) improved protection of the short-and medium-term food and nutrition security of vulnerable groups including women children internally displaced people ethnic minorities migrant workers and people living with disabilities to mitigate the crisis and prevent backsliding on decades worth of progress.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) provided nutrition interventions to 183 255 people (63% women and girls) to address malnutrition; (2) LIFT-funded institutions provided micro-finance loans to 2.63 million people (91% women); (3) assisted 18 546 farmers (52% women) with agriculture training; and (4) supported 141 788 migrants (54% women) with services for a safe successful migration.
