Project Description
This project aims to improve the nutritional and financial security of women youth and young children in six selected districts in northern Ghana. The project seeks to achieve this by supporting beneficiaries to increase agricultural productivity and diversify crop varieties while promoting gender equality in families and communities to facilitate a more inclusive value chain and business environment for the crops developed. Project activities include: (1) training women and men in equitable nutrient availability and child feeding practices; (2) promoting households to participate in farming as a business club using men and women as joint collaborators to build business skills; (3) engaging women and men in Village Savings and Loan Associations to promote access to financial services; (4) advocating to higher-level policymakers to integrate the Healthy Living Clubs approach into the Ministry of Health standard practice throughout Northern Ghana; (5) reaching 32 000 clients and non-direct beneficiaries with nutritious food promotion; and (6) providing gender-responsive and generationally-relevant business skills training. This project directly benefits at least 9 612 women 5 292 men and 7 560 children under five years of age with indirect beneficiaries of community-based activities numbering approximately 15 120 rural household members.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) more equitable and enhanced nutrition for households especially for women and young children; (2) increased control for women and youth on how revenue from sales of nutritious foods is utilized; and (3) improved support for a more inclusive gender-equitable nutritious and sustainable food system.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2024 include: (1)The GROWING Futures Club model successfully rolled out for implementation of the nutrition curriculum while using locally developed songs for more active participation by the Growing Futures Club members. The nutrition curriculum (9 modules) has been adapted to the northern Ghana context by being translated into 6 local languages for greater understanding by participating households; (2) led to 44% more women and 82% more children consuming sufficient vitamin A rich foods over the previous year which are important for reproduction growth and development; (3) at the community level trained gender champions facilitated gender dialogues within the GROWING Futures Clubs across Cycle 2 communities. A total of 12 dialogue sessions conducted with technical support from implementing partners. These dialogues provided safe spaces for GROWING Futures Club members to discuss critical gender issues explore discriminatory practices and foster equitable relationships within households and communities; (4) Following an assessment a total of 11 recipes developed using Orange fleshed sweet potato as an ingredient for popular local snacks. This activity has a huge potential of creating more demand for nutritious crops like Orange fleshed sweet potato while also empowering women economically and nutritionally; (5) from the outset the project continued to partner with the industrial processors by further supporting the expansion of their production capacity and enhancing the quality of products they produce; and (6) Healthy Food Connectors selected trained and supported with motorized tricycles (at subsidized rates) to serve as links between farmers and women marketers at market centers. This significantly improved market access for the farmers economic resource and financial holdings of women and readily available nutritious foods for families in the communities.
