Project Description
This project seeks to enhance equal learning outcomes and equal employability for adolescent girls in Tanzania. To achieve this the project will ensure: (1) improved competence of teachers and Alternative Learning Pathways (ALT) facilitators to deliver quality gender-responsive education and skills development; (2) adolescent girls (in and out of school) have increased knowledge and skills to make their voices heard in decision-making processes and issues that affect them; (3) parents caregivers and communities have increased knowledge and skills to promote girls’ participation and access to learning and skills development opportunities and (4) Capacity of government stakeholders strengthened to plan deliver and monitor equitable access to gender-responsive education and skills development services. Project activities include: (1) implementing a joint advocacy plan on quality equity and efficiency in basic education including prevention of corporal punishment Gender-Based Violence the inclusion of pregnant girls early marriage; (2) developing or strengthening continuous professional development modules and materials to ensure holistic gender-responsive and skills-focused content provision for teachers’ capacity building both in the Mainland and Zanzibar; (3) supporting the setup and roll-out of a school-based assessment for learning system to support teacher capacity to assess and respond to students’ learning gaps; and (4) establishing and registering empowerment clubs in all Alternative Learning Pathways centers providing opportunities for girls to acquire start-up capital from the district council. The project expects to reach about 354 346 adolescents (80% of whom are girls) who have or are at risk of dropping out of school or who have never attended school due to poverty marginalization crisis teenage pregnancy and early marriages. Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: 1) increased opportunities for adolescent girls’ (in and out of school) to make their voices heard in decision-making processes and issues that affect them; 2) improved access to girl-friendly protected secure and inclusive learning environments; and 3) promoted an enabling environment by increasing knowledge and skills of parents and communities’ member to promote girls’ participation and access to learning and skills development opportunities.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) provided learning materials to 10 alternative learning centres out of the 5-year target of 67 centres; (2) established 665 life-skills empowerment clubs out of the 5-year target of 1 415 clubs; (3) increased 30% of adolescent girls and boys involvement in taking science and mathematics subjects in secondary schools following interventions like open dialogues science competitions and improvement of teaching practices; (4) provided ICT learning material to improve the digital skills of teachers to 9 alternative learning centres; (5) supported 2 000 teachers (50% women) to disseminate safe schools’ packages to 659 schools out of the 5-year target of 670 schools. This includes a gender responsive teaching and life skills guide; (6) established 665 schools environmental clubs; (7) trained 880 secondary school science teachers (307 women) on science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) methodology out of the 5-year target of 3 300 teachers; and (8) successfully converted all Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) books into an interactive form ready for use in the institute's digital library for teachers and students.
