Project Description

This project contributes to a five-year Expert Deployment Mechanism for Climate Action in Africa to support official development assistance-eligible countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to address the causes and effects of climate change including measures that increase women’s capabilities to act as agents of change. It enables the flexible and timely deployment of qualified experts primarily Canadians from government civil society academia and private sector in response to requests from African governments at all levels as well as non-governmental entities. Project activities include: (1) improving climate change governance capacity; (2) improving climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives; and (3) enhancing women’s participation and leadership in climate action. The Canadian Executing Agency a consortium of Alinea International Econoler and WSP Canada Inc selected via a competitive Request for Proposals is responsible for identifying and deploying expert resources to meet the project’s objectives. Deployments are short-term valued up to $300 000 with limited exceptions and support one of the three components relative to each stakeholder request. Strategic climate-focused South-South exchanges are also supported.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved and more gender-responsive Sub-Saharan African climate change governance to implement the Paris International Climate Agreement; (2) improved mitigation and adaptation of climate change initiatives implemented by Sub-Saharan Africa governments and other institutions at the local national and regional levels including those that address women’s and girls’ climate change-related needs and interests; and (3) enhanced and more meaningful participation and leadership of women in climate change dialogue and action at all levels in line with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Gender Action Plan.
