Project Description
This project is a 12-month Canadian Red Cross initiative that aims to decrease coronavirus (COVID-19) related mortality and morbidity of populations. The project focuses on those experiencing marginalization and/or vulnerability in six conflict-impacted countries in Africa (Central African Republic Somalia and South Sudan) the Americas (Haiti) Asia (Bangladesh) and the Middle East (Syria). This is achieved by a series of activities designed to increase equitable coverage of public health and health care services for people infected with COVID-19 and improve community response to and recovery from COVID-19 with specific measures for women girls and those experiencing marginalization or vulnerability. The project expects to reach a total of 1 168 400 people ((537 446 men and 630 954 women).
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) Increased equitable coverage of public health and health care services for people infected with COVID-19; and (2) Improved community response to and recovery from COVID-19 that include specific measures for women girls and those experiencing marginalization or vulnerability.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2023) include: (1) identified 3 880 people (1 582 women and 2 298 men) with potential COVID-19 cases and they were then referred to health centres by volunteers and community members; (2) vaccinated 837 065 people against COVID-19 (8 963 women 9 488 men and 697 314 not disaggregated); (3) trained 694 volunteers and community members (281 women and 413 men) on COVID-19 symptoms and early detection or cases; (4) trained 290 volunteers (140 women and 150 men) on providing awareness activities to communities on harmful sexual and gender based violence practices—especially when aggravated by COVID-19; (5) procured 660 027 pieces of personal protective equipment including hand sanitizer masks gloves and protective gowns; (6) procured and installed 275 handwashing stations; and (7) project activities directly helped 595 771 people—1 147 more than the original target (209 942 women and 285 829 men). The activities indirectly helped 3 846 961 people—more than double the original target (1 955 085 women and 1 888 878 men).
