Project Description
This project aims to address barriers that prevent children particularly girls and nomadic children from attending school. It focuses on Sudanese states with particularly low rates of school attendance and on states with high nomadic populations. Project activities include: (1) setting up new schools and learning spaces including provision of gender-sensitive latrines to support girls’ attendance at schools; (2) providing awareness activities to communities to encourage school attendance particularly for girls; (3) conducting training for teachers and other learning facilitators and parent-teacher associations to improve quality of learning and the school system; and (4) supporting schools and learning programs by providing relevant learning materials including textbooks and dignity kits for older girls to support their attendance in school while menstruating.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access for up to 67 560 nomadic and vulnerable children (of which 50% are girls) to quality education and life skill opportunities in regular basic schools and alternative learning programs; (2) improved capacity of education stakeholders to support the education of out-of-school children; (3) increased access for up to 7 200 children (of which 50% are girls) to quality education through an expansion of the e-learning program.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) enrolled 91 478 out-of-school children (53% girls) in formal schools Alternative learning programs (ALP) E-learning programs across 13 states; (2) conducted 285 school enrolment campaigns and awareness sessions to strengthen demand for education especially for girls; (3) established 76 E-learning centres and provided 8 240 children with digital learning equipment reaching 9 703 children (4 037 girls) through the E-learning program; (4) trained 1 513 ALP facilitators and teachers in child-centred gender-sensitive and inclusive teaching methods; (5) trained 1 075 Parent teacher association members (85% women) on school co-management grant management and promoting girls’ education; and (6) trained 336 adolescent-led clubs engaging over 5 000 adolescents in psychosocial support life skills and leadership development.
