Project Description
This project aims to reduce the impacts of the removal of subsidies on the Sudanese population. These subsidies help to make goods like food and fuel more affordable so their removal is expected to cause financial challenges for families. This project works to provide capacity-building support to the Government of Sudan as it builds a social safety net program. Project activities include: (1) providing a cash transfer to vulnerable families for up to 80% of the Sudanese population; (2) offering financial literacy sessions to those who have not had a bank account or used mobile money before; and (3) strengthening the Government of Sudan’s capacity to implement safety net programs by offering technical assistance in areas such as payment delivery grievance mechanisms and monitoring. Canada is one of many donors contributing to this larger program which is managed by the World Bank and implemented through the Government of Sudan and the World Food Programme. This project expects to reach up to 80% of the Sudanese population (over 30 million people) with cash transfers including 30% women-headed households.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased capacity of Sudanese families to respond to the shock of economic reforms (including the removal of subsidies upon which many Sudanese rely for food fuel and other essentials); and (2) increased capacity of the Government of Sudan to build a social safety net system to provide support to the poorest and most vulnerable in Sudan.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) provided food and cash assistance to 2.7 million vulnerable individuals (55% women) exceeding the original target of 2.2 million; (2) enrolled 1.4 million beneficiaries through biometric registration to ensure help facilitate digital money transfers and for accountability purposes; (3) delivered agricultural inputs to 23 153 farming households (13% female-headed) supporting 59 004 feddans (roughly 61 237 acres) of wheat for the winter season; (4) identified 148 health facilities for infrastructure upgrades and registered 300 frontline workers for technical training; and (5) rehabilitated 6 Women and Girls Safe Spaces and initiated procurement of essential WASH supplies.
