Project Description
The project aims to promote a safe and healthy learning and living environment in migrant and host communities in Guyana’s hinterland and selected coastal areas in Guyana. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating community-based centres and community health facilities with emphasis on climate resistant buildings and optimum water sanitation and hygiene facilities; (2) implementing age appropriate programming focusing on migrants and children of the hinterland; (3) assessing the state of school environments in dormitory schools and consult with all stakeholders including the children in schools; (4) drafting Guyana Standards for Dormitory Schools including the human and financial resource needs and monitoring tool and consistent with the Regional standards and with the Ministry’s policies and plans; and (5) increasing access to menstrual hygiene-related education materials and disposal options. The project expects to benefit 40 000 children under the age of 4 years 20 000 parents/caregivers and 8 500 adolescent boys and girls in 100 communities across Administrative Regions 1 2 7 8 and 9 in Guyana.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased and continuous access to quality culturally appropriate child healthcare and development services for local and migrants boys and girls under the age of 4 years living in Guyana’s hinterland towards the realization of their right to a safe secure and healthy environment; and (2) increased access to safe and comfortable accommodation for boys and girls living in dormitories of secondary schools thereby improving performance and interpersonal relationships
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) established 2 new early childhood development spaces in hinterland communities; (2) introduced early childhood development programming to 9 new hinterland communities; (3) enabled 2 996 children in remote hinterland communities to access early childhood development services; (4) trained 75 community stakeholders on issues of gender-based violence and sexual and reproductive health; and (5) supported more than 37 health facilities to start offering adolescent friendly sexual and reproductive health services to boys and girls.
