Project Description
This project aims to improve rural communities’ resilience to climate change especially for women in the Kedougou region of Senegal. Project activities include: (1) providing training to 360 farmers from 21 villages on improving planting techniques and gender integration; (2) providing farmers with fonio (a type of heritage grain) seeds and agricultural inputs including soil nutrient field test kits; (3) training women-led cooperatives on the creation and marketing of biomass briquettes (for fuel) and the use of grain/cereal husking machines; (4) training community members on forest product harvesting and bushfire prevention; (5) seeding 28 000 indigenous plants; and (6) promoting agroforestry and the use of an indigenous tree species to enhance forest carbon sinks. he Jane Goodall Institute of Canada implements this project in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute the Réserve Naturelle Communautaire de Dindéfélo (Dindéfélo Community Natural Reserve) and the Association Nébéday.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased practice of climate-smart agriculture by farmers especially women; (2) increased women’s role in decision-making for sustainable livelihoods; and (3) increased adoption of forest protection practices by local government and community partners in ecologically vulnerable areas in the Kedougou region of Senegal.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of November 2023 include: (1) distributed fonio seeds and agricultural inputs to 882 women in targeted villages and trained them on improved fonio planting and storage techniques and reducing post harvest loss; (2) constructed 14 fonio husking machines and 14 storage spaces in target communities; (3) distributed packaging materials for the storage and marketing of transformed fonio including 75 packages of 50 bags and 15 sealing machines; (4) trained 68 community members on management systems for the husking machines and storage spaces; (5) trained 248 women and 108 men to market biomass briquettes in targeted villages; (6) trained 193 women and 21 men on governance and management structures; (7) trained 354 women and 193 men (including farmers community leaders and champions) on gender equality (including roles stereotypes social norms and men engagement); (8) trained 248 women and 108 men on biomass briquettes production and storage; (9) trained 716 women and 561 men in targeted villages on sustainable forest management and bush fire prevention; (10) planted 3 125 wild trees; (11) distributed 1 400 fruit trees to 690 community members (69% women) including baobab guava and mango trees; and (12) trained 29 women and 86 men (community-based forest monitors) on firebreak management and prevention.
