Sudan - Emergency WASH Health and Protection Assistance - World Vision 2021-2023

March 2021 - An estimated 13.4 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection across Sudan as a result of armed conflict food insecurity malnutrition economic decline and disease. Up to 2.5 million people are internally displaced within the country. Instability around Sudan’s borders has also led to more than 1.1 million people to seek refuge in Sudan including asylum seekers from Central African Republic Chad Eritrea Ethiopia South Sudan and Syria. With GAC’s support World Vision Canada is providing emergency health water sanitation hygiene (WASH) and protection assistance for up to 76 279 conflict-affected people in Sudan’s South Darfur and South Kordofan states. Project activities include: (1) constructing rehabilitating and/or maintaining 17 water systems; (2) providing mother and newborn healthcare through home care visits to 13 091 households; (3) reaching more than 64 000 people with health and hygiene messages including Covid-19 preventative messages; and (4) supporting community-based protection networks to help address gender-based violence and child protection risks.

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access and use of gender responsive life-saving water and sanitation facilities among vulnerable women girls boys and men; (2) improved or maintained health status of crisis affected women girls boys and men; and (3) increased access to safe spaces and enhanced protection status of crisis-affected women girls boys and men. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
