Project Description

This project supports the development of nuclear security support centres (NSSC) and related capacity building activities through the International Atomic Energy Agency. Project activities include: (1) carrying out expert missions to guide Member States through the process for establishing and operating an NSSC (including identifying requirements and competency gaps); (2) provision of physical protection equipment to two Member States’ NSSCs; (3) Provision of radiation detection equipment to two Member States’ NSSCs; (4) training and project management meetings for two Member States to assist with the establishment and operation of a national NSSC; and (5) organizing three NSSC Regional Cooperation Meetings a consultancy meeting for subject matter experts and a technical exchange visit by subject matter experts to an NSSC in Asia-Pacific to assist with human resource development.

Expected Results

The expected outcome for this project is an enhanced national nuclear security regimes in beneficiary countries through the establishment of Nuclear Security Support Centres that adhere to International Atomic Energy Agency standards and guidelines.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of July 2020 include: (1) the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) developed and launched the first phase of a "Library of Lessons Learned and Case Studies"; (2) IAEA Detection and Monitoring Equipment Laboratory staff provided technical expertise to support the development of specifications and technical evaluation of commercial bids for radiation detection equipment procurement under bilateral projects to support development of NSSCs; and (3) technical evaluation reports were successfully completed for procurement of spectroscopic personal radiation detectors training radiation portal monitor tele probe radiation monitors contamination survey meters and neutron search devices under the Egypt NSSC project.
