Project Description

This project supports strengthening the Global Fight against nuclear and radiological terrorism through raising awareness and promoting ratification and implementation of International Legal Frameworks related to Nuclear Security. The project activates include: (1) universalizing the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) and the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its Amendment (CPPNM/A); (2) supporting the adequate incorporation of their criminalization requirements into national legislation; and (3) providing capacity building of criminal justice officials and other relevant stakeholders on their implementation.

Expected Results

The expected outcome of this project is a rise in the number of countries who are more incline to cooperate with each other and exchange information related to potential cases of trafficking in nuclear and radiological materials.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved at the end of the project (June 2024) include: (1) provided legislative support through national outreach missions in Angola Ecuador Grenada Ireland the Philippines and Togo; (2) convened 2 regional Latin America and Caribbean capacity-building meetings; (3) completed translating e-learning modules on legal frameworks to Portuguese and Mandarin; and (4) developed and staged a mock trial in November 2022 in Vienna Austria to assist judicial officials with the criminalization provisions of the International convention for the suppression of acts of nuclear terrorism.
