Project Description
This project aims to strengthen Peru’s capacity to detect and deter the smuggling of nuclear and other radioactive material. Project activities include: (1) providing radiation detection equipment including mobile detection vehicle systems and handheld detectors to various stakeholders. This includes Peru's National Customs Superintendency the Peruvian Army the Peruvian National Police and other stakeholder agencies; (2) delivering operational and maintenance training to Peruvian personnel; and (3) assisting Peruvian stakeholder agencies with developing and implementing standard operating procedures in response to security incidents involving nuclear or radiological materials.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project includes improved detection and response by Peruvian stakeholder agencies to nuclear and other radioactive material’s proliferation and use.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of September 2020 include: (1) provided 2 mobile radiation detection vehicles to Peru's Institute of Nuclear Energy (IPEN); and (2) delivered workshops on the development of Standard Operating Procedures to personnel of Peru’s National Customs Superintendency (SUNAT) IPEN and the National Police of Peru.
