Project Description
The project supports the International Atomic Energy Agency in providing comprehensive technical assistance to 15 states in Latin America and the Caribbean (Bolivia Chile Colombia Costa Rica Cuba the Dominican Republic Ecuador El Salvador Guatemala Honduras Nicaragua Panama Paraguay Peru and Uruguay) to develop and/or strengthen their respective national regulatory infrastructure for nuclear security and radiation safety.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) the development and/or review of the national regulatory infrastructure and legislative framework for nuclear security and radiation safety; (2) the establishment of national security and safety policies and strategies for radiation devices and radioactive sources; (3) the development and/or review of the national radiation safety and nuclear security regulations; (4) the Implementation and/or update of the national registers containing information on all radiation devices and radioactive sources inventories; (5) the training of regulatory staff for (authorization and inspections process in nuclear security and radiation safety; assessing physical protection systems for radioactive material and associated facilities and activities in use storage and transport; the development and maintenance of a national registry for radiation devices and radioactive sources); (6) an increase in awareness - Raise awareness of nuclear security among decision makers and the familiarization of senior governmental officials on how to develop maintain and sustain a national nuclear security regime and train senior stakeholders in relevant management practices and in updating relevant International Atomic Energy Agency databases.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2020 include: (1) the completion of two consultancy meetings on developing national policy and strategy for radiation safety and security of radioactive material; (2) the preparation of work materials and programmes for the organization of a regional workshop on Policy and Strategy for Radiation Safety and Security of Radioactive Material; (3) a consultative meeting conducted for the review of the school for Drafting Radiation Safety and Security Regulations held in January 2020; (4) a regional Training Course on establishing a National Register of Radiation Sources using the Regulatory Authority Information System held in March 2020 in El Salvador; and (5) conducted two consultancy meetings to address medical and industrial practices on the authorization and inspection process in radiation safety and security of radioactive material.
