Project Description
This project aims to support the development of effective national regulatory frameworks and related measures for preventing illicit trafficking of nuclear or radiological materials in Bolivia Chile Colombia Cuba Ecuador Mexico Paraguay Peru and Uruguay. Project activities include: (1) organizing and delivering a series of regional workshops to subject matter experts and stakeholders in these countries to identify national requirements and actions for developing effective nuclear security detection architectures; (2) installing and commissioning radiation detection equipment at five locations in Cuba; and (3) delivering related operational and maintenance training to Cuban personnel.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project is greater capacity on the part of beneficiary countries to prevent detect and respond to security events involving nuclear and other radiological material outside of regulatory control.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of April 2020 include: (1) a regional awareness-raising workshop with stakeholders of Bolivia Chile Cuba Mexico Paraguay Peru and Uruguay on the scope and framework of a national nuclear security detection architecture was organized and delivered; and (2) a Statement of Work with Cuban stakeholders for the installation and commissioning of radiation detection equipment was finalized.
