Project Description
This project seeks to promote inclusive economic growth in developing countries where Canada engages in trade or investment agreements by deploying Canadian and international technical experts to assist developing countries negotiate implement adapt to and benefit from bilateral or regional trade agreements with Canada. Project activities include: (1) providing technical assistance to government officials on engaging in discussions and/or negotiations on inclusive trade or investment agreements; (2) supporting ministries departments and agencies to implement inclusive trade and investment agreements with Canada; and (3) private sector organizations on how to adapt to and benefit from expanded trade and investment agreements with Canada.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) more inclusive trade or investment commitments within exploratory discussions negotiations and agreements between Canada and project partner country governments; (2) improved policy or regulatory environment within the project partner countries to implement sustainable and inclusive trade and investment agreements with Canada; and (3) increased access to the benefits of sustainable and inclusive trade and investment agreements with Canada for the private sector civil society organizations and particularly women indigenous peoples and other under-represented groups in the project partner countries.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) improved skills of 1 195 government officials (58% women) to negotiate trade agreements in Colombia Paraguay Peru Vietnam and the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN); (2) strengthened the capacity of 1 018 other government officials (44% women) to implement trade agreements in Colombia Paraguay Peru Vietnam and ASEAN region; (3) strengthened the capacity of 161 small and medium-sized enterprises to increase their export business activities in Colombia and Vietnam; and (4) increased awareness of gender equality and environmental considerations in trade negotiations of government officials in Colombia Paraguay Peru Vietnam and ASEAN region.
