Project Description

This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to Grand Challenges Canada (GCC). GCC uses these funds along with other donors’ funding to achieve its mandate. GCC's mandate is to support innovators to develop and transition to scale innovations that improve the health human rights and well-being of women adolescent girls and children in low- and middle-income countries including in conflict-affected areas.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased use of gender-responsive inclusive and locally-driven health products and services especially for the most marginalized and vulnerable; (2) increased effectiveness of diverse innovators to test and transition their health innovations to scale and sustainability integrating gender equality human rights inclusion and environmental sustainability; and (3) enhanced generation sharing and integration of evidence and learning from innovative gender-responsive inclusive and locally-driven solutions to health challenges by Grand Challenges Canada and other innovation ecosystem actors.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) improved the lives of 992 000 people in low and middle income countries through access to innovations in the areas of maternal and newborn care sexual and reproductive health and rights water and sanitation and humanitarian services; (2) provided access to 3.5M people to innovative gender-responsive health products and services; (3) trained 28 526 health sector intermediaries to use innovative products and services to improve health and wellbeing including sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR); (4) 89 105 intermediaries use innovative products or services and SRHR services for women adolescents children and newborns; (5) for every dollar of Global Affairs Canada funding invested innovators have leveraged an additional $3.10 to be reinvested in global health and humanitarian innovations.
