Project Description
This project works to enhance the human rights of women and girls through media development in the Democratic Republic of Congo Kenya Tunisia and the Syrian diaspora in Turkey. Project activities include: (1) providing training/mentoring to journalists journalism students and media professionals (women and men) on gender sensitive reporting through human rights journalism; (2) providing training/mentoring to managers (women and men) on best practices to achieve/manage gender balanced newsrooms which support human rights reporting and gender equality; and (3) providing training/mentoring to women’s human rights organizations on media relations engagement and collaboration. The project expects to target 1 720 journalists journalism students and media managers (of which 50% women) and 320 civil society representatives (of which 50% are women). The project’s media partners also expect to reach a targeted audience of 1.5 million people.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) strengthened media sectors delivering improved coverage of women’s and girls’ rights; (2) increased access by women girls men and boys to information including on decision making process related to the rights of women; and (3) improved participation of media and civil society in public life in particular by women in media and women’s rights organizations.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) trained 1 151 journalists journalism students and media professionals (61% women) on gender-sensitive reporting; (2) trained 317 media managers (32% women) on best practices to foster gender-equitable environments within media organizations; (3) 68 women journalists participated in training of trainers sessions on human rights journalism through workshops and mentorship; (4) 662 on-air forums organized for community members to create awareness amongst community members or leaders on the rights of women and girls; (5) trained 207 media outlets and civil society organization representatives (67% women) on collecting sorting and disseminating data on human rights; (6) reached 36 million people (48% women) on the rights of women and girls through media platforms on human rights; (7) engaged and trained 358 decision-makers (39% women) on human rights issues focusing on the rights of women and girls; (8) trained and mentored 315 human rights civil society organization on using media to reach the public; and (9) produced 34 media pieces on women's barriers in the media sector with a human rights organization and women's rights organizations.
